Let us shine light under the stars

Three scientists enter the scene to give a conference. It feels like the start of a lesson, but it’s not: among spectacular experiments, small lab accidents, and constant bickering, a light and surprising story takes place about physics and various phenomena surrounding us. Through direct use of live experimentation, the audience is led along a path made of amazement and discovery, where materials changing their state, lights and shadows, secrets hidden in the layers of paintings, and everyday objects behaving in an unexpected way become a chance to question the workings of the world. The experiments, chosen for their aspect and the ability to arouse curiosity, are intertwined with ironic dialogues and theatrical situations, which make the scene dynamic and engaging. Thus the show moves in balance between scientific rigor and theatrical play, showing how science is not a distant and abstract knowledge, but rather a way of seeing reality with new eyes. Without the pretense of explaining everything, the show invites you to ask questions, be surprised, and recognize in the simplest phenomena traces of a charming complexity. This is a story on science made by real scientists on the stage, in which experiments and jokes alternate, so as to make up a shared experience encouraging critical thinking and restores the pleasure of discovery to the public.

Biography
Marina Carpineti is Associate Professor of Physics Teaching and History at the Department of Physics of the University of Milano. She has experience in optical techniques, both as teaching tools, and for the study of physical systems. Marina collaborates to the realization of innovative experimental techniques. Since 2004, she has launched, together with her colleagues Marco Giliberti and Nicola Ludwig, the initiative “Lo Spettacolo della Fisica” – “The Show of Physics” (spettacolo.fisica.unimi.it), which has realized 8 shows of scientific theatre, with an audience of 150.000 people in Italy and abroad. Marina has been a member of the Permanent Educational Committee of SIF (Società Italiana di Fisica – Italian Physics Society) and vice-president of FAST (Federazione delle Associazioni Scientifiche e Tecniche – Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations), on account of which she takes care of the event “I Giovani e le Scienze” (Young and Science) as a speaker and jury member. Marina is the author of conferences-performances on Physics and Cooking; and has collaborated with the encyclopedia “Treccani Ragazzi”, as well as with dissemination magazines.
Marco Giliberti obtained a degree in Physics at the University of Milano with a dissertation on the fundamentals of Quantum Physics. He is Associate Professor at the same University and carries on research in teaching Quantum Physics, Quantum field theory and Physics through the theatre. Moreover, Marco is responsible for teacher training. He is the author of over 100 publications in National and International magazines; he is co-founder of the group “Lo spettacolo della fisica” (The Show of Physics), co-author and actor of eight scientific theatrical shows and a lecture-show. Marco is president of CooFIS08 (Coordinamento Nazionale del Settore Scientifico Disciplinare ex FIS/08 – Didattica e Storia della Fisica – National Coordination of the Scientific Disciplinary Field – Physics teaching and History). He has published extensively.
Nicola Ludwig, Associate Professor of Physics Methods for Cultural Heritage and Physics elements for environmental sciences at the University of Milano, he studies multi-spectral investigation methods on paintings, archaeological and monumental manufacts. During several years, Nicola has worked with different research groups for the development of non-invasive experimental methodologies. mainly in the field of study and preservation of Cultural Heritage, as well as in the fields of Biology, Veterinary Medicine and Sport Science. He published a few monographs of a popular nature, from which he drew inspiration for an original documentary series for Discovery Channel (SKY). He is co-founder of the group “Lo spettacolo della fisica” (The Show of Physics), co-author and actor in eight scientific theatrical shows and a lecture-performance. He took part in popular and entertainment TV broadcasts.
