A Book of errors. Why scientists need to make mistakes.
5 June 2025, 21.30 – Villa Arrighi
Educational Conference.
Speakers: Davide Coero Borga (scientific communicator), Giulia Bistagnino (researcher in political philosophy), Elisa Cimetta (engineer), Marinella Davide (researcher in climate policies), Laura Ferreri (cognitive neuroscientist), Valentina Guglielmo (astrophysicist)
Certinly science is not the symphony of successes and great discoveries which the headlines would like us to believe, but rather a series of out-of-tune sounds of a would-be musician. Trial and error. Science goes on through trial and error. Do you remember? Welcome to the celebration of scientific error. Between uncertainties and slips, we will discover a science which tries, makes mistakes, tries again and insists. The Book of Errors by Gianni Rodari is the starting point and setting of this strange stage, on which scientists and researchers describe their relationship with error. How one makes mistakes. Why it is important to do that. What you learn. It’s time to sit down and listen to science which becomes a fairy tale.

Biography
Davide Coero Borgais an author and television host, videomaker, creative communicator. For the channel”Rai Cultura”, he hosts the well-known scientific programme Newton. First technologist at INAF and art director of the magazine “Universi”, Davide has been writing articles, filming videos, documentaries, and portraits of researchers for years. Since 2025 he has entered the group “Fatina” for scientific communication.
Giulia Bistagnino is associate professor of political philosophy at the University of Milano and adjunct professor at Sciences Po (Menton campus). Her research interests include political justification and public reason, the concept of compromise, the relationship between experts and democracy, the theories of pacifism and right war. Giulia also collaborates with the Museum of Philosophy of the University of Milano.
Elisa Cimetta is associate professor at the University of Padova, where she leads the BIAMET lab. Her work is on the borderline between engineering and biology: she develops micro-devices and “organ-on-chip” models which recreate – inside the lab – the behaviour of human tissues, in order to study how diseases are born and grow. After a few experiences in Padova, at MIT and Columbia University, Elisa gave her contribution to the development of innovative technologies for the analysis of the tumor progression, and the reaction to therapies in controlled, realistic environments.
Marinella Davide handles climate policies at the “Centro comune di ricerca” (Joint Research Cente)” of Ispra. She belongs to the team following the “Patto dei sindaci” (Covenant of Majors), to provide methodological support to cities and evaluate the progress, impacts and common practices of the initiative. Her main research areas are the analysis of policies on climate and low-carbon energy, and their links with le loro sustainable development. Marinella is experienced in the area of EU climate policies, UNFCCC negotiations, urban and local action.
Laura Ferreri is a cognitive neuroscientist and associate professor at the Department of Nervous System and behavioural Science at the University of Pavia, where she teaches Psychology and the Neuroscience of music. After her degree in Cognitive Neuroscience at the San Raffaele Institute in Milano and a Marie Curie PhD at the University of Borgogna, Laura worked in Barcelona and Lyon. Her research explores cognitive and brain processes which make human musical experience unique in terms of emotions, memory and social dimension. Laura is actively engaged in the dissemination of music neuroscience.
Valentina Guglielmo is astrophysicist and scientific journalist. After her PhD and a research period abroad, Valentina currently works at Inaf, where she writes and creates articles for the online magazine Media Inaf. Valentina obtained her Master in Science Communication with honours at University La Sapienza in Roma, and wrote for various magazines specialized in Physics, Medicine, environment and climate. For Inaf she realized “Houston”, the first podcast for the Institute, and her second podcast. It is devoted to space, failed landings, desperate innovations, and brilliant solutions.
